Hi Allan. I suspect that at least two bidders decided that it was antique French. It is a timeless issue - even the most bizarre attribution only has to convince two bidders, and you get a surprisingly high price. I have just pointed out to
Boldon Auction Rooms that their 'Bacchus' is a Murano and their 'Clichy' featured on their Home Page is Chinese. So estimates of £3000 plus may be excessive! But it would only take two people to believe it, and who knows what the Chinese might sell for.
