Souvenir of Lord Rosebery's Ladas winning the 1894 Epsom Derby
« on: September 15, 2011, 03:51:20 PM »

Click image above for glass gallery with eight images, all enlargeable with a click.

Height 3" 8cm, length 3¾" 9.5cm, weight 6oz 169g.

Relief Inscriptions:
Right rim:  M DAWSON / TRAINER (probably engraved into the mould)
Left rim:  J WATTS / JOCKEY (probably engraved)
Right instep:  LORD / ROSEBERY'S (probably punched into the mould)
Left instep:  LADAS (probably punched)
Across foot:  WINNER OF DERBY / 1894 (probably punched)

I don't immediately recognise the punch font, but of the obvious candidates, Greener seems most likely.   It's a nicely moulded piece.   This example has a few small nibbles from its inevitable spell in a toy box, but has survived remarkably well.

I've never seen or heard of this souvenir before.   Any further information?

Thanks for your interest,

We have one, Bernard. We have owned it for quite a number of years (maybe ten or fifteen).

My neighbour dug one of these out of an old railway tip at Retford about five years back.  It was a fairly pale aqua colour.  He sold it last week (!), or I'd post a piccy.
