Hailware Hailwood & Ackroyd advertising pressed glass bowl
« on: September 17, 2011, 11:14:04 AM »
Probably not the most exciting piece I have ever posted  :-[ but can remember Nigel and Bernard discussing H&A and Ackroyd & Best of Morley, Leeds West Yorkshire.

An interesting preamble Chris:

In some ways I agree, however, it's interesting to postulate that had that ash tray had, say, 'Whitefriars' sprawled across it, then the same thing (with the strong image of a glass blower) would indeed be considered interesting ;)

I find it astonishing that Hailwood and Ackroyd, and to some degree it's predecessor, Ackroyd and Best, produced such an array of different glass that the information has simply disappeared. Both produced commercial and domestic lighting, but H&A also made art glass, cut glass and pressed glass in addition to their architectural lighting panels. Although a number of these are known, any item by them can add to our knowledge of their production :) :)

Thanks for posting the images, Nigel

Hi Nigel, sorry should have worded it better, really meant interesting in it's appeal to members in general  :-[
I actually had you in my thoughts when I picked up I have made a note of the other trademarks they used and will keep an eye out for you on my varied travels around Yorkshire.
Did know a little about Ackroyd & Best and Hailwood & Ackroyd, the pressed glass and the miners lamps did they also do the globes for petrol pumps ?

Hiya,

Please don't worry Chris, I did say

I just wanted to pose the question about such an apparently prolific company whose work does indeed vary!

To answer your question, yes, they also made petrol globes.

I think the ash tray appeals to glass collectors generally because of the image of the blower as well as pressed glass colectors and anyone else out there who might like Hailware ;) :) :)

I got one of those too! It is a great bit of British glass advertising. I bet the model was one of the workforce too, now wouldn't it be nice to put a name to him?

Going by Nigel's comment... were I to list it on eBay should I use "Whitefriars - eat your heart out..." as the auction title  ;D

I've one as well!   It is here, on the shelf next to me, serving a useful temporary function as a parking place for a vintage spherical wasp trap.   It is supposed to be in my stock, but it's strange how, when the box it's in gets unpacked, it seems to miss out on actually making it on to my stand.   ;D

Like Frank, I've wondered about the identity of the model.   H&A were not specialists in high volume pressed glass produced at speed, so it is quite likely that it wasn't made by H&A.   Firms like Nazeing, and, in Yorkshire, Wood Bros and Bagley would have been able to make this ashtray so cheaply that it wasn't worth the effort to make it at H&A.   In which case we might be looking at a Nazeing, Wood Bros, or Bagley glassblower!

It's amazingly popular for an unexciting piece of glass!   ;D

H&A were not specialists in high volume pressed glass produced at speed, .....

Do you have a source for this assertion Bernard, or is it purely an hypothisis??

The glass blower was indeed one of the workers at the factory. He was also a pugalist. I don't have my reference available at the moment, so can't pass on his name. Oh, so far they have been found in three colours, well if you include clear as a colour ;) :)
