Newbie needing some help PLEASE.
« on: September 19, 2011, 04:18:37 PM »
I got these 2 pw's at an estate sale. Have no clue to maker or value. They are unsigned and in mint condition. Any kind of help will be gratefully appreciated. Thank you.

Regarding maker, I think you have asked a very difficult question, because so many different makers in different parts of the world have made similar paperweights in the last 150 years! The quality of glass can be a clue to age - good quality, clear glass usually indicates a newer piece. And the base treatment can help: polished but not very circular often - but not always - indicates Chinese, and there are certainly weights of this 'ice pick' style coming out of China.  The Czech Republic is another possible source. Mint condition suggest a relatively new piece too. But my money would be on a small studio maker, somewhere, rather than China.

Value is a little easier to offer views on. If I was selling one of these, I would be happy to get £3 / $5 for it. Not to say people don't sometimes pay more, but I have seen broadly similar items for sale in charity shops and at car boot sales for next to nothing.

I thought it would be a hard question. They are quite old. mint I mean no chips. The lady at the sale was in her 70's and stated they were her mothers. I'm gong to see if I can find a guide on these. Thank you for the help though. Its appreciated.

I would agree with Alan's assessment but add one more bit. Whether weights of this design are 150 years old or made yesterday, they all pretty much sell for the same low price.
