Huge Smoky Uranium Art Glass Sculpture Bowl ID Please...
« on: September 30, 2011, 08:37:47 PM »
Hi Guys,

Recently acquired this wonderful piece and based on a previous ID, I am inclined to think it may be a Sea Glasbruk design. It weighs 2.5kg and measures approx. 18 x 8''. It glows very brightly under UV light and is smoky grey in colour. Base is flat polished. Is anyone able to confirm or dismiss my suspicion please?...

Cheers, Charlene

Hi John,

Sorry, forgot that important detail - it glows bright green. Hope you can help based on this.

Cheers

No sorry, just curious and surprised (not the most obvious bit of uranium glass).

Which bit glows? And can you see the glow brightly in daylight?  Your photo looks to be in sunlight and I can't see a hint of a glow. I seriously doubt that it glows uranium green. It may just contain a high concentration of manganese.

Hi Christine,

Indeed, you're most certainly right regarding high manganese content, I was somewhat astonished (and thrilled) when I pointed my UV pen at it, to see it glowing bright green when it gives off not even the faintest green glow in sunlight. It glows markedly brighter around the thicker areas, i.e. the rim and base however it does glow in its entirety in an unlit room at night.

Any suggestions regarding a designer/factory?

Cheers

Holmegaard could be a candidate.

Charlie...are you saying that your dish glows in the dark without UV?   :huh2:

Any chance you can let us see a photo of it under a UV light too?  Thanks! x

It's not Holmegaard. Looks more continental to my eyes.

Hi guys,

Thanks for your replies and sorry for taking so long to upload a pic of it glowing.

Still hoping for an ID :)

Cheers, Charlene
