Just musing here on finding something interesting (well it is to me lol)
I was searching for something else and came across this marked lampshade (see link) for BCM Hailglass/British made.

http://www.tooveys.com/lots.asp?WEBLOTID=175559&LOTID=1416&AUCTIONID=

Had it not been marked I would never have said this was British but rather Bohemian or maybe German.
For future info in case the link disappears, the item is a white opaline lampshade with black enamelled hearts near the fitter rim and black enamelled (matted) silhouette type dancing fairies round the shade.
I'm curious, did BCM/Hailglass only make lampshades?

thanks Chris  :sun:  I'm off to have a much bigger trawl.  I love the lampshade and I'm now wondering about other items they may have produced similarly.

Also previously known as Ackroyd & Best besides Hailwood & Ackroyd may help your search.

Hi,

I was lucky enough to be allowed to take photos of the lampshade at Toovey's, so have good copies for later use. The chap who bought it also thought it unusual for British glass, being a collector of fairy silouettes on glass vessels, he expected it to be german or Austrian.......and a tad earlier in date.

There is a small piece of background info here, if you scroll down to the bottom -http://www.20thcentury-glass.org.uk/id65.html

Hi Nigel and m,  did you have a look at the catalogue/advertising page for 1937?

http://www.gracesguide.co.uk/File:Im19370917Elec-Hailwood.jpg#filehistory

Apparently they made the fittings also.
"We have the largest stocks of glassware to be found anywhere in Britain"
Branches/showrooms in all the major cities London, Birmingham, Glasgow and Belfast

Interesting snippet here... "Before the war German and Czech glass blowers employed there"

Lastly, any the thoughts what BCM that precedes Hailglass stands for.

Chris — I thought that BCM HAILGLASS might be H&A's telegraph/telegram/telex address, from BeaCon Morley

My H&A lampshade has has different codes but the same lettering in the same font as the one that started this topic.   In addition to cold-painted enamel, not, I think, fired on, it also has a band of cold transfer decoration, again, I believe, not fired on.

Please be cautious about assuming that H&A made their advertising ashtray, a common type of assumption in all collecting spheres.   In Yorkshire both Wood Brothers and Bagley could have made and supplied that ashtray very cheaply, and I think it more than likely that one of the two did.   In the interests of accuracy I've said on this on my ashtray price and information ticket.   Another example — I recall a year or two ago coming across a collector who assumed that a specialist papermill had made their own office typing paper!!!

Finally, I love the information about the wrestler and the fascist sympathiser.   Brilliant.   ;D

Chris, thanks for the information  :)
What I need is one of those types of companies available now, so I can ring them and ask them to make the bits I need for my various shades that don't fit the various lamps I have  ::)
And I still keep buying them cos I can't resist....knowing that the chances of things matching are somewhat remote  ;D  - my oh is heartily sick of my lamp and shade buying over the years to say the least.
