Strathearn weight?
« on: October 17, 2011, 04:16:16 PM »
Hi all,

The reasons for this attribution seem slim to me.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SCARCE-VINTAGE-STRATHEARN-GLASS-PAPERWEIGHT-/260869197325?pt=UK_Art_Glass&hash=item3cbd040e0d#ht_500wt_1204

IMHO, it is not Strathearn.

What does everyone else think?

I totally agree with you. I collect the abstract and "nature-based" Strathearns and cannot think that this is one of them. I have most examples and it doesn't seem to fit the bill of the missing ones which have no photo reference that I am aware of , such as Aztec and Snow Trail *(see Richard More's site on Ysart Glass).

Ronnie

It looks like this one http://lustrousstone.co.uk/cpg/displayimage.php?pid=1056

These are thought to have been made in the Pilkington studio at the museum shop.

There is a little resemblance but yours is so much nicer. By the way, I really love your glass gallery. It is a pleasure to look at all those great pictures.

I'm pretty sure it is a paperweight made by / influenced by the Czech workers who came to Pilkingtons (St Helens) and produced a whole range of 'Bohemian' inspired designs, often using opaque yellow and orange within slightly blue-green clear glass. You get trumpet flowers, butterflies, small flowers with people's name, etc. I believe these date to the 1960s/1970s.

Hi All
Nice to know there are other Strathearn lovers out there !  I have one very unusual Strathearn weight which is 5" diameter and looks as if it is filled with small stone chippings and has the leaping Salmon impressed in the base but here is a picture of one of the Strathearn weights Richard More told me he does not have and it is called "Lava" has anyone else copy a copy of this as it doesn't seem as if many were made.  I would love to get hold of a Strathearn Crown weight as they way they did the twists on these was fantastic

I walked in to the Antique Centre in York's Shambles early summer and sitting in a cabinet was a Strathearn "Lava" paperweight. Needless to say I now own one.
