Early (?) Mdina Inside-out Vase. When might it have been made?
« on: November 02, 2011, 12:27:08 PM »
Just picked up this Mdina Inside-out vase from a local antique market.  The neat script for the name makes me suspect it may have been signed by Michael Harris - it is very close to the examples show in Mark Hill's book and on Yobunny.  I would appreciate an expert guess at the dates please.  As ypu can see it has the early paper label as well.

I'm not certain who's script that is (Dobson or Harris) but I suspect Harris, Sue is good on these, hopefully she will comment. I think it will have been made in 1972 or before and nice to see that early label.

Lovely vase, if I had not bought a green one recently I would be cursing. ;D

John

Try photographing it against a dark background, a lot of Mdina photographs well like that.

I'm suspecting it's Dobson 'cos it's a bit spikey. How big is the script?

The tallest letters are just on 6mm(quarter of an inch) tall Sue.

Having looked at a few more signatures on stuff I have here I would agree, have also just realised a bowl I have which I had assumed was signed Mdina by Mr Harris must in fact be in Eric Dobson's hand.

The actual lines of Michael Harris' script are very thin, much thinner than the lines of Dobson's, and the lettering is curvier.

Both scripts are great to have on an item.

Thanks for that Sue.    It is a lovely piece and I am happy to have found it for a reasonable price.   :hiclp: :hiclp: :hiclp:
