Possibly WFs. Powell vase pattern 1265.
« on: November 08, 2011, 08:44:55 PM »
Leslie Jackson shows this shape in streaky blue (page 116) - but I don't have the big book so unable to comment whether this colour (sanctuary blue) included there.       Believe the 1931 W/Fs. catalogue shows streaky colours only, and don't see the shape in any other catalogue  -  although may, of course, have missed it somewhere.    So if someone able to check the big book for me, just to confirm that sanctuary blue is listed for this pattern, I'd be grateful.        Height of this vase is 8.25"/210mm, and for a vase it is remarkably free from any water staining, and the 'ring' is very typical of the long and resonant W/Fs sound.    thanks for looking :)

Hi Paul, it's a good 'un mate nice find not, got the big book but the 6 sided pattern is definitely right looks Sanctuary in the last photo, may not find the pattern but these were often given 1 pattern no for all the different variations like threaded wave ribbed cloudy etc.

thanks Chris  -  and certainly the six sided swags and colour seemed to suggest W/Fs. to me  -  although I don't now deliberately collect their pieces, and so always remain in need of other people's confirmation.               Not very technical, I know, but as I said, the 'ding' also had that W/Fs sound.           As you can imagine, it's always better if the exact colour/pattern/shape can be seen in a book - just makes you feel really confident. :)

Hi Paul, just been informed the pontil mark looks a little large, see if anyone else looks in  maybe Pat who is up on the older pieces and probably got the Museum of London book, if not I will send a couple of emails pointing in this direction.
cheers Chris

Chris is right about the pat. no. being used for different finishes:

.....1 pattern no for all the different variations like threaded, wave ribbed, cloudy, etc.

I have no problem with this being a 1920's/30's piece of Powell (Whitefriars) - although a straightforward silouette mug shot would have been more heplful than the one taken at an angle. Much easier to compare  ;) :)

A scarce shape.
