Large amber vase with polished pontil help
« on: December 04, 2011, 03:23:15 PM »
Hello forum. I am a newbee with some glass knowledge but not enough. I run into glass items occasionally but do not collect them. This vase stands 12" high. The brim is 6 1/4". The bulbuous part is 7 1/2" wide. There is a polished pontil mark and hole in the bottom middle of the base with target rings. The top is adorned with what looks like amber stained glass pieces with wire, (maybe copper?) This vase is beautiful and the gold amber color is clear. There are some tiny bubbles that are not noticable unless you are close and in the sun light. I have only a guess what the maker is. How about the experts? Thank you for letting me be a part of this forum. Bill

Sue, thank you for the response. I will try Iberian. I didn't describe the pontil area well. The hole does not go all the way through.

I would seriously doubt that it has a pontil mark, such items rarely do. Looks like the sort of thing found in modern home decor shops. (Sue means from Spain or Mallorca.)

That pretty much answers my question then. For learning information, what would the cavity in the center bottom be for? Also there are no seams. Thank you Christine                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                             MY OPINIONS ARE FREE AND WORTH EVERY PENNY YOU PAY FOR THEM,,,,,Bill

I agree - hurricane lamp from Spain probably made in Spain or in Morocco. The dell inside is where the candle goes. You should not be seeing any seams in glass made in a turning mould.
