Any idea's on this unique bowl?
« on: January 01, 2012, 04:10:23 PM »
Since I'm new at glass collecting and learning I need help with this one.
I can't tell if its a quality piece or just junk. I like it either way but was just wondering.
The surface is textured inside and out. It is white and clear with blue tint to the white areas.
The pictures are on a black surface, white surface and window light.
thanks for any info.

Lilly to find a signature on a piece with a rough surface one would normaly brush on lightly flour or talc.  Obviously, that will not work for you.  What you need is a darker powder that would wash off.  You might be surprised to find either an engraved signature or perhaps a raised in like Etling would have had - either way I think it is worth the effort to check.

A think it is a facinating piece of glass - a most interesting find.

Interesting piece. It looks like it's corroso, a Murano technique involving an acid treatment of the surface. In addition, in some of the photos it looks like there's some opalescent glass in the bowl, also a technique used in Murano.  If Murano, then doubtful that there will be a signature.  Murano would be a good place to start looking. I don't think this is junk, btw.

No idea as to origin, but it is opalescent glass. Not junk. Not junk at all!

And Im new to identifying, not collecting :) I just collect what I like... but it looks very organic in style. Pic 7 looks a bit like an ear.

Hi,

This looks a lot like Blenko's  ashtray/bowl from the early 60's.  Take a look at www.blenkoarchive.org.  Try the catalogs from 1960 and 61.  I believe I've seen one in opal before.

Adair,

I see the similarity somewhat. but I don't see any corroso pieces in the catalogue. Did Blenko do corroso?

Thanks for the link to the Blenk catalog, btw, as I hadn't seen them before.

Hi everyone, and Happy New Year!
I agree with chezholloway that it is a Blenko piece.
I have owned similar pieces, and they are mold made, and come in different colors.
Not sure how unusual the white color is, but it is not Murano.
Hope this helps.

I read once that when thinking of Blenko to think transparent. Blenko prided themselves of the transparency of their colors. Did Blenko do any opaque glass other than some of the decorations on their vessels? Did they make any opaline glass at all? I'm not a Blenko person, so there is much I do not know about all they did.

I just checked and found one opaline line of glass. It was a specialty line known as Rialto. So yes, they did do a small amount of opal glass. Interesting to learn a new thing about Blenko.
