OK, Who made the lampwork?
« on: January 05, 2012, 12:03:28 PM »
Kevin, you did suggest this so I'm starting it. Since about 2005, which this is, the leaves on JDs flowers have had a very definite veining on them, different to the 19th century type, at first I didnt like them but now I do. Whether John makes the new type leaves or not I do not know but the pansy is exquisite. Who is the torchworker?
   Regards Roger.
PS. This is a discussion board isnt it,I hope.

Hi Roger
I am going to put my money on Willie Manson doing the lampwork for this beautiful weight as he was working with John Deacons at that time and it was the following year they brought out the Strathearn range of weights which had both their signature canes but let's see if anyone else has any other suggestions

I got this J Deacons paperweight as a present a few years ago, not knowing much about paperweights I assumed JD done the lampwork. That was until I read the previous thread relating to lampwork. Does anyone know who done the lampwork on this paperweight.

Hi Gary
My guess is that John himself made the lampwork in your weight but I can appreciate how confusing it is when John made many paperweights using lampwork by different artists. After a while you do get to know their techniques and styles so it is often possible to identify them

Perhaps it might be an idea for those interested in tracking down the correct artists to contact JD and ask him to provide clarification about past weights - and to encourage him to include their canes in the weights in the future too - let him know that this IS what collectors want to know.

Hi Dave,

No, I have not seen them. Was this recently? Do you have a link or a picture?

I know that Allan has started working with John Deacons again and was told that they were doing a batch of pedestal weights. Would this be from the same 'batch'? Do you know?

Anyway, I am looking forward to see Allan's work again.

Would it be this one?

Interesting weight, as you can clearly see what JD has added as the 'encaser'.  Can't say I like it, but I'm just not a fan of pedestal weights in general.  Too fussy for my tastes!
