Seven facets....?
« on: January 13, 2012, 11:57:25 PM »
Just an idle question really.  A common faceting style with paperweights is a single facet on top and a number around the side.

Around the side I've seen 4,5,6 and 8 facets - but never 7.  Are there any 1+7 paperweights out there?  If not, why not?

Just curious....

Hi Graham

I have many facetted weights in my collection but I don't have one
with 7 facets although there is no reason why they should not exist.

From a practical point of view, facet cutting of paperweights is generally
done free hand so I suspect its just a question of the time it would take
to get 7 facets cut and balanced.

4 and 6 are easy angles to work with - 90 and 60. 8 is just 4 doubled up.
7 is horrendous 51.43 !!

Having "had a go" I know how difficult it is to get just 4 facets to balance
both horizontally and vertically.

Incidently I have an engraved weight by Phillip Lawson-Johnson
with two rows of 10 facets!

Best regards

Derek

Hi

Just checked my weights.

I have a Clichy posy weight with seven facets around the top major facet.

I then checked my Whitefriars Cylinder weights and the majority have seven facets around the sides.

Hi

Just checked my facetted Dodgy Ysarts and two of them have rows of seven facets.

Looks like seven is not so rare.

Thanks Derek and Roy,

Many thanks!

Must be just me then!  I have one Whitefriars (5 facets) and (sadly!) no faceted Clichys.  Oh, and one unfaceted dodgy Ysart (which I like, but that's another story).

Interesting that the faceting seems to go with the make, although not surprising I guess, as I presume there may only be one or two faceters per maker - and they're likely to have their favourite cuts.

Thanks again, I'll look for a seven to add to my collection now (and a nine....).
