Portland vase challenge
« on: January 14, 2012, 12:59:17 AM »
Hi there,

I don't often post outside of the paperweight forum, but this time I have something to share.

I have seen the Portland vase replica blank!!!

As many of you know, there is an(other) attempt by Richard Golding and Terri Colledge to re-create the Portland vase. This is part of the celebration of 400 years of continuous glass-making in Stourbridge.

I went to the Ruskin glass centre to give Richard Lamming some paperweights for restoration today. Once I had finished with Richard, I toured the various shops/studios as I always do. When I got to Terri Colledge's studio, it was shut but the Portland vase blank was there in the window on Terri's worktop... I could not believe my eyes. And even with all the cameo work still to do/engrave, it is already impressive. This is going to be a fantastic piece. Also, Richard and Terri are working on two further pieces and one of these was there and more advanced... A beautiful piece already...

I am hooked, I may have to go back regularly just to see the progress...

thanks for the up-datge Sophie.      I know almost nothing of this projected copy, and only a little about the original - is the idea to reproduce exactly i.e. violet blue ground with white figures, and a disc on the base.     I've foregotten - if I knew in the first place - but what happened to the first attempt  -  did it break?
