I reckon you are correct.  I thought most Caithness had at least scatch marking in the earlier times and presumably this predates plastic labels (leads me to wonder when plastic labels were introduced).  I wonder of it is a darning mushroom which would account for no colour perhaps - one can't imagine Caithness without colour normally at least in a generic shape like this.

i thought caithness mushrooms were colourful cant find anything in clear glass. it looks like a wedgwood mushroom

I have never seen a coloured label on a Caithness paperweight (which is no proof, of course) nor have I ever seen such a mushroom (which is no proof either, as I concentrate on paperweights).
According to Mark Hill's book, however, a coloured label was used during the 1990ies/2000ies on glassware - this could be a remnant of it.
