I obtained this oddity at an antique store yesterday, without a clue as to its intended function (I'm assuming it to be vintage late 1960s). The seller isn't sure the stand is original to the piece, although they were apparently purchased together at an estate sale, and the label is upside down when the piece sits in stand. Any help would be appreciated to solve this mystery.

Hi, Can you see any small holes around the knobbly top part? I say this because I recall my mother having a set similar to these back in the 60's/70's and I do believe that her ones were flour/sugar shakers!!! Just a thought

I am new to this forum, and I thought that I would start off by contributing a bit. :wink:

This Vallien-piece was a very popular going away-present (filled with candy) in the seventies (I think, possibly later) here in Sweden. The stand is not original to the piece.

cjf (welcome to the board, you're an asset to its diversity!) is absolutely right, of course. It is from the time when kitchen containers were turned upside down and stoppered on the underside - I have one from Iittala.
