Looks like it's a kind of pitcher or punch bowl?  Couple of links which may help:

http://www.nicks.com.au/index.aspx?link_id=76.659

http://www.crystalclassics.com/waterford/designers/museumpiggin.htm

Quote from first link:

"The word piggin is the diminutive of pig" or pigkin," terms used in medieval days for small pitchers made of pigskin from which beer, wine and cider were often quaffed direct."

I first encountered a piggin in the Ulster Museum of Belfast - last October.
It's a Waterford one. I managed to get a pic.

Hi,
Piggins from the late 18th and early 19thc mostly of Irish make and very well cut are thought to have been used for butter or salt and the like .

    Cheers ,
                   Peter.

 ;D

It's just a wonderful name for something, isn't it? The Waterford one in the museum was my "first encounter of a piggin sort"

just had a look around ebay, but can't seem to see a glass piggin bowl anywhere  -  sold already ;D
"Wonder how many I have passed at car boots and auctions without a second glance"  -  hope I haven't, since I put a description on the GMB some little while back, so no excuses for me to pass one by................http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,40361.msg223396.html#msg223396
