Cut glass vase RD 711903 - manufacturer and pattern, please
« on: February 09, 2012, 09:46:55 AM »
A cut glass, thistle-shaped , footed vase with ruffled rim is currently listed on ebay at
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/120853348699?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649

The listing states that the base is marked with RD 711903, and the seller has checked and confirmed that number for me. The maker’s mark is illegible.

I’ve looked on http://www.great-glass.co.uk/glass%20notes/regnos08.htm but the number is not listed. If correct, the number would have been allocated early in 1925. Is it possible that the RD was allocated to a class other than glass?  Can anyone confirm the registrant (and possibly the pattern) please?

Thanks in advance for all help.

Registration numbers 711901, 711902, and 711903 were all registered on 23 March 1925 by Young and Hodgson Ltd.
[Source: The Glass Association's "Blue Book" Registration Numbers 1908 - 1945]

Young & Hodgson were glass and china dealers, not manufacturers, so the maker of the piece is still unknown.

An entry in the 31 Jan 1908 London Gazette gives this announcement about the firm:

Quote
NOTICE is hereby given, that the Partnership heretofore subsisting between us the undersigned,' Walter Sanderson and Henry James Young, carrying on business as China and Glass Dealer.*, at 21, Red Lionsquare, Holborn, under the style or firm of "SANDERSON AND YOUNG." has been dissolved by mutual consent as from the 31st day of December, 1907. All debts due and owing to or by the said late firm will be received or paid by the said Henry James Young. And such business will be carried on in the future by the said Henry James Young, at 60, Shoe-lane, Hoiborn, London, under the style of Young and Hodgson.—As witness our hands this 23rd day of January, 1908.
H. JAS. YOUNG. WALTER SANDERSON.

hello  -  when you say the makers mark is illegible, are you saying that you have been told there is something in addition to the No. but it's just not possible to make out what that something is?      I'll put my head on the block and say that it is unusual for a piece to carry a makers trade mark i.e. E.& L. for example  -  and then to also include a No. showing it to have been registered to a completely different company.         Pieces often show a No. only, by which means you can see that the piece was registered to someone who wasn't the maker  -  or they might just show just the makers logo i.e. E.& L. - or sometimes the makers trade mark plus a Rd. No. belonging to that maker.
It's possible that what you are being told is an illegible makers mark is simply marks made by wear.
However, nice oldish vase.          Sometimes it's possible to help with the makers marks. if we have an indication of even just part of it  :)
