Hi,

can anyone help me with this little vase, please? I´m having a mayor clean-out at the moment
and any information will be appreciated.
The vase is made of clear glass with green frits to the foot and pink ones to the vessel. The
whole vase including the snake has gold leaf applied to it. The foot shows a folded-under rim.
There´s a vase in Anita´s zoo here - ´tentatively attributed to Salviati´.
A small difference is the eye. While the one on Anita´s vase looks to be fired, the one on mine
looks like a small piece of a cane.
Would this vase be as, more or less tentatively be attributed to Salviati I wonder...
It´s ca. 15cm tall.

TIA
Dirk

edit: forgot... the snake on my vase only has one eye

They do look like the same vase. Some glass was made more carefully than others back in the dragon days of Murano. Your snake looks like it is throwing up, poor thing. I've seen a lot of the creatures that look like they are in absolute agony. I'm not sure if it was indeed Salviati that did it. If I remember correctly, I got the idea from a vase attributed to Salviati by Rosella Junck. That vase was minus the snake, but the solifleur was the same. I'll have to backtrack to make sure it was RJ that attributed the vase.

If you are thinking of clearing that vase, I would recommend holding it a bit longer. It is a very good vase that you probably couldn't get enough for at the moment. Dragon glass popularity comes and goes.

Many thanks, Anita - much appreciated! Like many other glass the snake is sharing the fate
of living in a box in the cellar, of which I thought to relieve her...
So we´re datewise around 1900? Or do you think these were made later also?

I believe the vase is a bit earlier. 1880-90s if I remember right. I checked my Junck book tonight and didn't see the solifleur I based my tentative attribution on. I can't remember where I saw the vase. Perhaps on Junck's photos that are no longer available online. :(

I can live with a tentative attribution...  :)
Many thanks for taking the time to go searching!

Sorry - forgot to ask... Would you like a picture or two for your zoo?

Sure. I can post yours beside the other to give a bit of variation. I can use the picture above if you wish. If you will send me your full name, I'll credit the photo. Thank you!
