Whitefriars black swan cane only
« on: February 27, 2012, 06:21:35 AM »
Call me a sentimentalist - but I recently bought this Whitefriars cane simply because it is the West Australian Black Swan - the emblem of my state!.

I know that Whitefriars made a limited number of paperweights for Western Australia's 150th anniversary in 1979 using this as a central cane (none of which has come my way  yet!) Does anyone know if this cane was used for anything else ?

thanks

Jackie  :usd:

Hi

I collect both Whitefriars weights and canes.

As far as I am aware this cane was only used in the 150th Anniversary of Western Australia date cane 1829/1979 weight.
I believe there were two versions with slightly different swans. Certainly one version was made for a shop in Australia (Boans?)

My weight is 40/50 so they are quite difficult to find and expensive

Roy

Thanks Roy and JP. Yes it was Boans - a Western Australian family department store back then - now defunct - sold out to Myers,  a bigger chain.

You would think if there was one of the paperweights going spare it would be here in Perth though! have never found sight nor sound of one.
Roy, would love to see a picture of yours if possible!

and dumb question - what do I do with the cane now I have it? how would you display it??

regards

Jackie

Hi Jackie

I have sent you a photo of my weight which was just too big for the message board.

I mount my canes in a small plastic lid using Bluetack or Whitetack.

My containers range from a milk container lid to a Ferro Roche Lid but I have to eat the sweets to use it!!

As I say in my email try google PCA Roy's Magic Box.

I also have one of the black swan weights and two versions of the cane of the swan in it. I know several different canes were made of the swan and put into trial weights which are owned by Brian Slingsby and these are shown in his booklet Whitefriars Paperweights Collectors Guide. It only costs £10 and profits go to charity, it is an invaluable reference guide and the only one in existence so well worth trying to get a copy if you can.

Based on the canes that I have, there are at least three varieties of the swan cane: a mold formed black swan in a slid white, pixelated black swan in an light opal pixelated white, and an second pixelated swan in a lighter pixelated opal. ("pixelated" meaning made of of tiny bundled canes). The cane pictured is one of the pixelated swans in opal.

Hahaha  :24: Thank you, John >:D

Yes, I have a (solid) black swan cane in my Ray Annenberg pendant and I also have a small collection of WF canes which includes one solid black swan and one 'pixelated' one   ;D
