Thanks everyone - lots of fabulous information and ideas. I rather fancy having it encased in silver and made into a pendant. I might go and get that priced somewhere.

I can quite clearly see the bundled canes in the white of the cane, not so clear in the black - but now I know they are there....

When it arrived and I opened it I did wonder to myself "why did I buy this, what will I do with it?"
Now I know - that sentimental moment on Ebay may turn into a lovely piece of jewellery  ;)
