Kosta Boda sticker - help narrowing down the date please
« on: March 17, 2012, 09:47:36 AM »
I'm trying to narrow down when this sticker was used on kosta boda glass

I've also attached a picture of the label in situ

The reason for the question is that the bowl was made using the same mould as the Ernest Gordon Afors piece (eg here) but graal, not 'ariel'.
The bowl could have been made as a trial piece when Ernest was at Afors (and the label is spurious) or maybe it was made after 1976 (when I understand Afors, Kosta and Boda were all part of the same group) by someone playing with an old mould (the pattern is surely not so stunning that you'd set out to make a new mould copying an old bowl ?).

The bowls also differ because the graal one has a foot added (unsigned).

any thoughts ?

is the label white and the piece unsigned? If so it's been used for the last 25-30 years.

Daniel,

yep, white and unsigned.

it's definitely from the same mould as the Afors bowl - do you know if any of the Afors moulds etc would have ended up at Kosta's factory ?

Interestingly I have another pair quite similar:

first picture is Afors graal, signed and normal production

second picture is unsigned, with added foot and ariel, but from same mould.

To me the bowl on the link and in this thread hasn't the same shape.
Remember this is a very common shape.

Boda-Kosta-Åfors were three companies. Åfors didn't have their own labels after they became one. It's very possible that they cleared some old storage rooms and sold them as second choice items.

Daniel,

Ta.

I've got three of the bowls on the freeformsusa site, and the sizes vary by quite a lot, but the reason I know they are the same is that they both have the same aztec ariel/graal design, it just gets a bit distorted when blown out into a bowl - when I can get one of the Afors bowls out of storage I'll post some better pictures to show you what I mean.

Your point re second choice makes sense, I suspect this was an experiment they didn't pursue.

thanks as always

Gareth

you mean from the same series?
Because each will be unique if he didn't use a mask, and that's a new technique so it can't be it.

when I spoke with ernest gordon before he died he described it as a hot glass process more akin to thallata - clear core with a thin blue skin on top. blown into a mould which caused the blue to thin and thicken - then coated again in clear and blown out into the bowl.

The mould was in three parts, in all 4 bowls (3 afors and 1 kosta) you can see this three part in the bottom of the bowl (see picture below) - bit like how I understand the spike/hedgehog moulds work.

hope this is clear.
