Help deciphering Kosta vase mark
« on: March 02, 2012, 12:15:19 PM »
dear all,
I need more help :-)

the vase in the picture is kosta, signed "Kosta 01826" (insert - I guess it is a zero, might be an "O"). does this help anybody to identify the designer or year or anything useful?

thanks in advance for any help

best regards
glassmanet

I can't be much positive help as this code doesn't seem to conform to the code used in the 50's and 60's, which would have two letters in front of the numbers, the first for the artist, the second for the production method (hand formed glass, cut glass, etc). The four numbers would be a production code. The code doesn't conform either to the post 1970's code.

My guess is that it's a Lindstrand piece, production number 1826, which would have been produced after the period "Swedish Glass Factories" covers. Why the "O" I have no idea. O was code for Ollers, but this isn't one of his pieces.

I'll be interested to see what comes up here.

I agree that this is Lindstrand.
I've seen this numbering more often on this piece (see example here number 67 http://www.freeformsusa.com/glass/lind1.htm)

I think there was a posting on this sight suggesting 0 might be a second, but I don't think this was confirmed (and the bits I've had we're fine)

That's jogged my memory, Gareth.  I've got a similar piece to the one at Freeforms. It's marked LH 06086. Another similar piece is shown at Modernist Glass marked LH 46085.  So the last four letters are the same, but I'm still not sure what the 0 at the beginning means. AT least we know it's not a one-off and there must be some significance to the 0. I can't see any flaws in my piece, btw.

the 0 indicates that it belonged to an old stock that Kosta sold out at some point. So the signature is fully ok

Daniel,

Thanks for that info. I had a feeling that you were the only person who could solve the puzzle.

dear all,

thanks for helping me - much appreciated! so I learned that lindstrand pieces can exist without any "LH" or "LG" in the signature, which was new to me. thanks to all who contributed to solve this issue.

best regards,

one thing I forgot is that my piece is completely fine (for the age) and I thus support the notion that the leading "0" is not a sign for a second.

happy easter
