A friend knows an elderly lady aged 97, whose grandfather was Frederic Heathcote, Glassmaker, who works were in the Aston / Great Barr area of Birmingham England in the 1880s–90s.   Apparently his business went into liquidation, upon which he became a baker, suffering the same fate in about 1908.

That's all she knows.

Does anyone know more?

Bernard,

From curiosity I searched the 1901 Census and found the following entry:

Frederick Heathcote, Age 47, Born: Warwick, Civil Parish: Aston Manor, Occupation: Baker Bread & Biscuit

Looks better in a table...
http://www.1901censusonline.com/results.asp?wci=person_results&px=3&searchwci=

You can click the name, but this is a charegeable service: something 'Anne' might be able to help you with further.

One other point that might help; as Birmingham at this time (1890) was still a growing town, Aston was a separate parish and was not absorbed into the city until 1893 (from memory).

David — Grateful thanks, I will pass this on.

Later: Now passed on — also I suggested contacting Roger Dodsworth.
