Frosted Sommerso Vase
« on: March 19, 2006, 02:02:50 PM »
Here's another mystery piece from my collection.  I believe I saw it once listed in an auction catalog or somewhere else as "Italian", which isn't too helpful.  It's a fun piece, although it has a healthy sized nick to the other side.  :(

Any help with attribution would be appreciated.

Charles.

Stunningly simple and gorgeous Charles!  What a shame it's got a chip.  :(  :(

Absolutely gorgeous, I am drooling (how attractive haha!).  Where did you get this from Charles?  I too have seen a few pieces like this on eBay and they are almost invariably marked Italian.

Perhaps the corroso technique?  Or perhaps the other technique used by Paolo Venini, the name of which escapes me at the moment... I know it is in Nigel Benson's small green Miller's guide, it's a pinkish diffused looking vase... aaaah can't think at the moment!

Amanda.

Nooo it's not inciso.  That gives very very fine grooves encircling the piece.

I don't know the Italian terminology for 'frosted'.  Maybe it's light Scavo, before the acid dug in too deep?

Thanks for the posts.  It is frosted glass, not inciso.  I bought it at a consignment shop about 8 years ago.  (I find consigment shops to be good hunting grounds in general; for some reason, their owners often know nothing about this kind of glass or are too lazy to do the research).  I'm assuming it's vintage 1970s or late 1960s, but even that's a wild guess.
