Hi Stew

The weight has a spatter base that is typical of Begium weights.

The crossed flags would seem to indicate an alliance of some sort. The black yellow and red flag is the Belgium flag but as for the black white and red I have drawn a blank.

Its not the french flag as this is red white and blue and has been since 1790. The Belgium flag is said to be based on the French tricolour and was adopted in 1831.

One of the German flags from the 1860's through to 1935 was  black white and red stripes but the stripes were horizontal.

Any one else have any ideas on what the black white and red flag could represent??

Best regards

Derek

Rome, for one year only 1798.  So possibly a french tricolore was intended but overcooked?

There was a military mutual assistance treaty from 1920 which was disbanded in 1936. This franco-belge was considered a symbol of french supremacy by the flemish. So that would possiby date it to 1920....

hi john the black yellow and red one is Belgium and the other is french. that one looks like black white and red on my photos is actually blue white and red . thanks ivo think you are on the right path with the franco - belgium accord of 1920 but i can not find any other commemorative ware online or in my books. it might be a weight made by a french speaking Belgian to show his alliance this might make it earlier
thanks
