Whitefriars Stars and Stripes flag
« on: April 21, 2012, 02:30:09 PM »
Hi All,  can someone with extensive Whitefriars cane knowledge help me with this please.

I have attached two photos. The first is a standard Whitefriars paperweight "bell, flag and eagle" with a small USA flag cane having 20 stars and 11 stripes (6 dark pink and 5 light pink). This type of flag is repeated in my other USA series paperweights that have edition numbers.

The second photo shows a "bell, flag and eagle" paperweight that has no edition number on the base (see my earlier post about missing edition numbers). The flag in this weight is different (a totally different cane) and one I have not seen elsewhere. This flag looks too square to represent a typical flag. It turns out that it has 13 stripes (7 dark pink and 6 light pink).

Does anyone know if this was a trial that was later rejected (in favour of the 11 stripe version) because it looked too square?

Has anyone else got a Whitefriars weight with a 13 stripe flag like this?

Regards

Tony

Hi Tony

My triple small flag weight has the 13 stripes on all three flags and is numbered.

My flag, Bell , Eagle weight has the 11 stripe Flag, and is not numbered.

The small flag cane in my collection has 13 Stripes.

I think they made at least two different cane pulls and depending on the size of the stripe cane decided on the number of the stripes.

Regards

Roy

Hi,   many thanks Roy. That has cleared things up a lot. Two different canes but both used in issued weights. This is a bit like the two different flame canes in the Olympic weights.

Thanks again,

Tony

Hi Millefiori,
if you click on the envelope by my name on the initial posting of this topic you should find my e-mail. Send me a note and I would be happy to swap ideas on Whitefriars weights. I do have two of these weights but with them having different flags I am rather reluctant to sell. I am also looking for some USA series weights which you have info. on.

Hi Tony

As Roy has correctly stated only so many canes can be obtained from one length so if they ran out a second, one or several subsequent canes, would be pulled.
The best example of this is the (three) kings Christmas weight. I belive there are something like 20 different king canes
