caithness jewellery
« on: May 21, 2012, 07:19:01 PM »
anyone give me a reason why this http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=110879689642   went for £172.  it is a very nice stone, with some complex and early canes, but it is a bit OTT -  nice rings like this go for up to £50.  The bidding is also secret - which does raise suspicions.

Have I missed something?

Mods - I know this isnt a paperweight but caithness jewellery usually treated as such

I bowed out of the bidding at a much lower price but I did think it was an exceptional ring. The stone itself looks very Paul quality and a goodly amount of silver.  Anyway I guess two bidders fought it out till the end.  The secret bidding always raises questions of course.
As someone always used to say//////  Its a cracker!!!!!!

I agree - c£50-£60 for a good one.

I rather like it too, and put a 'decent' bid on.

I was stunned to see it tonight to discover the final price....

It makes me think the bidders who bid it up are dealers who have already had one and assessed the silver value perhaps.

I would imagine it's the silver collectors who were out in force.
The design of the work is quite "iconic" for its time.
