Nice art-nouveau vaseline stuart vase possibly powell????
« on: June 12, 2012, 04:08:33 PM »
One of a pair i got from a local antiques fair while bargain hunt was being filmed.
They are the most unusual colour im not up on vaseline and opal's colour's but im thinking it might be blue opal as it has a definate blue hue in light but more of a orangey colour out of the daylight. My initial feeling was stuart but the ones ive owned have all been clear with green trails or green on green so im also keeping my options open i was hoping of a powell attribution....
They measure 10.5cm tall 7.7cm accross the base 10cm accross the top which has 6 ruffles the base has a small central well finished poished ponti scar.
Thanks for looking....

nice piece :)  -  Keith, are you basing your provenance on the similarish example in Gulliver - page 121??          In the book the description is given as ...pale turquoise body with opalescent trails..........no mention of vaseline though.       It looks as though this example may not have quite the same body colour as in the book, but otherwise has a lot in common. :)

Mervyn never mentions vaseline, assuming you mean uranium, and never gives an attribution unless he has documentation to back it up. Are these actually uranium? They look like it. I agree with Keith's attribution though.

I only made reference to the word vaseline, as this was used earlier in the thread, although I appreciate this is not how uranium glass is described in the U.K.        To my eyes, this piece looks opalescent but not uranium - although I could of course be wrong.    Time to get the torch out. :)

thanks Keith, then quite probably this one is also.         Must admit I'm not a fan of the word 'vaseline', when used as a substitute for uranium, although it occurs to me it might have been used simply to describe the colour (instead of opalescent) - since they look similar.
However, a very nice pair of vases.

p.s.    crunch, munch, nibble............that's me eating my words. ;)
