Oh my! Orrefors Ariel, Ingebord Lundin. date please?
« on: June 28, 2012, 03:45:47 AM »
This is amazing. I took a chance and bought it on spec from USA with very little information on it - and am thrilled. Low vase or tall bowl - not sure which. 6 inches (15 cm) tall, and almost exactly the same diameter at the rim - just a fraction over the 6 inches. Is a burgundy/brown colour, and clear.

Signed to base
Orrefors. Ariel Du 3 67 O
Ingeborg Lundin.

quite a lot of base wear.
I thought it was quite new, but as I have researched it I found that she died in '92, and I am now thinking the "67" is the year it was made? can anyone help   me  with that?  And what do the other letters/numbers mean.?  I found that D was the mark for Ingeborg Lundin but is that what in means when teamed with the lower case u ? and the O (or Zero, not sure which) What is that?
Thanks for any help. - off to clear a display shelf - this needs to stand alone!  ;D

Gorgeous piece to find and makes me believe in taking chances again. Ariel is  difficult to date, but using the information in Ruding's chapter on the Orrefors' marking system, I'd say around 1965. Was it from eBay?

Hi David, Thanks - it is lovely.

No not Ebay, it was from Replacements Ltd - the US firm. That is why I thought it would be of quite new making.  I got some very nice Caithness Studio pieces from them last year - so was browsing Caithness on their site, and then just happened to look at their Orrefors listings . It was described just as Orrefors ariel du. They don't show sizes, and only one side-on photo. They didn't answer my query about size etc and I was so anxious not to miss it if it was really Ariel I took a punt anyway. It was quite a bit of money (for me) to spend - but I think it was worth it compared to Ariel pieces I have found advertised elsewhere.
Now I need a graal piece!  Would love a fish graal! Or is that greedy.........

regards
Jackie

Forgot to ask David - what makes you think 1965?

I believe this is quite a well-known design - I've certainly seen blue ones in my books.
(or maybe it's the same photograph over and over).

Fabulous find - I'm very jealous!

Hi Sue
Yes,  when I was googling images after I received it I found several similar in blue. Different shapes though - none were exactly the same.

Jackie,

Sorry I wasn't clear. Ulrika Ruding's chapter on Orrefors marking in Wickman, "Orrefors" is the clearest explanation of the coding Orrefors used. She says that the coding 100 O to 968 0 signifies glass designed and perhaps made in 1965, but she includes a fair number of caveats about Ariel numbering in general. However, I think it's fairly safe to say that your piece dates from 1965. The ariel design used is one used by Lundin a fair bit. The shape of vase and the colour are less common. However, I have seen pictures of her very popular ariel piece with a face on it in this shade of brown.

For me, this a much better find that one of the fish graal pieces (and probably worth much more, too).
