id request for R/Brierley wine/rummer.
« on: July 18, 2012, 06:55:08 PM »
I've finally mastered the Picassa process, and thought this was an attractive glass to show, and at the same time to ask if one knows the pattern name.        I can post in the C5 Crystal Patterns as a mystery item, but would prefer to include a name if possible, so hoping someone might know more.   Thanks for looking.  :)

knew I'd forget something.            The backstamp is simply the word BRIERLEY - anyone know if this comes before or after the rather free hand written Royal Brierley?    I've not seen this style of backstamp previously (not that I'm suggesting it's rare)  -  I normally see the hand written looking one.

Brierley Crystal became Royal Brierley Crystal c.1925, when they received a royal warrant from King George V.  Brierley backstamps would pre-date the royal warrant, methinks.

Some earlier versions of the Brierley mark shown here too Paul:

thanks for your sleuthing Anne.       The R/Brierley backstamp I see quite commonly is that shown in the first pic. (a hand written looking backstamp)  -  however, this rummer has a backstamp as shown in the second pic. - simply the word Brierley in upper case, and which oddly I'd not seen before  -  maybe it's used for particular production pieces - this is decorated with copper wheel engraving only, no cutting in the usual sense.
I can't believe that this glass is very old - perphaps no more than 30 - 40 years, certainly the underside of the foot has a quite modern look  -  am I correct in thinking that Royal Brierley ceased in c. 2000?
Dodsworth (British Glass Between the Wars) comments that during the 1960's, the factory used the word 'Brierley' in various forms - so perhaps this is one of those. :)
