Blue Stuart Crystal
« on: July 12, 2012, 02:28:23 AM »
Just purchased this water set (unfortunately missing a glass - ah well a set of four PLUS a spare.  Interesting as none of the pieces has a Stuart touchmark but 4 of the five glas & the jug have a tiny green oval paper label "Stuart England" not the larger green oval "Stuart Crystal Great Britain" I was familiar with.  Attached is a basic photo of the set - which by the way appears to be "Woodchester" pattern.

I was wondering if someone has approximate dates for this crystal as I had never seen the colour before.

A photo of the label might be useful

At last I got round to some serious photos.  This set will be of the Jug, the next of one of the glasses.

Note there is no touch mark only a label.  The base is very free from wear so it has been unused I suspect.

Now for the glasses.  Again no touch mark for Stuart.

Also the centre of the base has a slight "nipple" compared to the other similar glasses I have, and the base seems a little deeper dished.

Ross, your wineglasses appear to be a slightly narrower version of my pink one here:
http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,40522.msg226014.html#msg226014 - mine have a different pattern on them which matches that and the colour of the Stuart jug I found it with. That shape glass matches your jug much better than the shape of mine!

Interesting - I looked up my Stuart catalogue photos - I have attached three for your perusal Anne.  It seems that what I have seen called a pilsener glass in Woodchester pattern is for Iced Tea(how couth!).  In the Fruit Set page it is for Orange/Lemon/Tomato/???? juice.

Of note is a third shape for a jug & glasses in the bottom half of the fruit set page.

Do we know when they started doing that lovely blue glass?  Would it have been 1921?  When did they do the rather unusual base for my glasses?  Does anyone have dates for that type of label?

Interesting. I wonder if those catalogue pages are aimed at the American market; the terminology and defining a use for everything indicates that to me. You could have shandy in your glasses though; it says so  ;D

Ross, thank you for sharing the catalogue pages - I'm thrilled to see my Stratford pattern bowls and ice plates shown!

I've never heard the term Quencher Set used in the UK, so I'm wondering if Christine's right in that this is a catalogue aimed at the US market, or even the Australian one?

I haven't seen the 3rd style of jug before either, but it's interesting to note the different patterns too.

The whole catalog is on Yobunny at http://glassgallery.yobunny.org.uk/thumbnails.php?album=938 and it is the first section of the gallery.  Might be of interest to have a trawl.

Doh! I'd forgotten it was there Ross, and that I've been through it before... thanks for the reminder... my head is so full of clutter it'd lost that snippet of info.  :-*
