Saint Louis (hmmm ??) peacock paperweight
« on: July 28, 2012, 10:33:25 AM »
In a recent thread I had stated that the majority of ebay sellers respond gratefully if one helps them with attributions - well - there are exceptions.

The seller of this paperweight insists it is Saint Louis (proven by the number of bids) and suggests in his response that I just don't know what I'm talking about.

There might be a possibility he changes his mind if either some of you contact him as well, or state here on the board what you think it is.

gosh I don't think St Louis would be too happy about that  ::)
Is that label genuine? just wondering if someone has managed to get hold of a whole load of them, like the Whitefriars labels that were available recently on ebay.

As far as one can be sure from just a photograph: yes - the label is genuine, but to my knowledge was used only for crystal glassware/stemware - not for paperweights.

And to avoid any misunderstanding: I am not(!) suggesting this label was put on by the present seller - he might as well just haven been deceived himself.

The Chinese have made these for a good number of years.  We have a 'peacock farm' on one shelf with several sitting next to each other (don't have a green one though). We are hoping that they might breed (mind you, I keep hoping that about my Bacchus weights too... ;D).

Well - or not so well - the weight actually fetched 106 Euros with 9 bidders :o.
This corresponds to CHF 127.33.
If you do a search on past auctions of "Peacock paperweight" you'll get (today) 11 hits:
7 sold for CHF 9.15 /  10.54 /  10.68 /  14.63 / 18.53 / 19.46 / 30.57 with the one going for 18.53 being sold BIN by Gary McClanahan (with correct attribution, of course, and detailed description);
4 didn't get a bid at start price 4.88 / 9.74 / 17.55 / 21.95.

Another French seller seems to have seen this auction and offered the same weight as "Saint Louis, unsigned". Being an honest seller, however, he withdrew the auction immediately after being informed about the misattribution - showing that sellers even accept advice if it is "bad news".
