Help with unknown marks to Italian Vase?
« on: August 05, 2012, 03:29:10 PM »
Hi All,
I bought this vase yesterday because of its 70's mustard yellow colour, and I initially thought it would be a Scandinavian vase. It has a white interior, cased in the outer coloured glass. The base ' pedestal ' has been added to the bottom, it looks like glass has been trailed round and then flattened to give a nice flat base. It is marked to the base with ' ?? italia 81 ' I think, but I cant read the first bit. Is there any one on the board that can guide me in the right direction ( as usual!! ) Its a large vase at 11" tall and approx 5" across.
Cheers, David.

The first word seems to be "venini" 8)

Michael, thanks, I wouldn't have got that  ???  but I don't really follow Italian glass as a rule. I will now start googling for further info. It's a nice vase!

Thanks again Michael, after a few hours googling, I have come to the conclusion that I may have THE MOST BORING bit of Venini glass they have ever produced. They have made some amazing glass, kinda takes the shine off my vase now!!

I thought that at first too, except I don't remember seeing a foot constructed like that before - a sort of trailed ring. Does anyone know if this type of foot has a name?

The shape is quite subtle and the mustard colour with the black is interesting, it has grown on me.  Are you thinking of chucking it out? ;D

Need a date for it now.

John

John, I wont chuck it yet....but one day maybe!!  The number on the base reads 81 ( maybe 01 )  I thought that maybe that was when it was made, I dont think its terribly old and google images chucked up a couple of sites selling them new, but the range shown didnt have the mustard colour listed and I'm not sure the foot is exactly the same.

Could the second word be Atelier?  That would suggest a sort of workshop rather than a normal production company.

Venini Italia 81 is short for who made it, where it was made and when it was made. It is a well known vase - I think they are still in production.
