Whitefriars 9094 optic vase in sapphire...or not?
« on: August 13, 2012, 07:38:41 AM »
Hi, don't normally like to post things if I can check on them myself but I'm having issues with the whitefriars catalogues online - no matter what I click on it goes through to the same page -1957 page 2! is probably my pc but heyho.  ::)

So can anyone confirm one way or the other please?

It does show a little darker on this black background than in standard daylight.

Heavily ribbed internally, 6 inches high x 4 inches wide at the rim. Large, deep polished pontil

Lovely vase

cheers!
Mel

Hi,

The problem with enlarging the catalogue image on Whitefriars.com is ongoing - you're not going mad ;)

The wide pontil on this vase suggests, not Whitefriars, but a Stourbridge company.

right shape, right number of ribs & right size

...........but also made by other manufacturers.

The credo for me goes:

Three characteristics that say it isn't, then it isn't (whatever you think/hope). Three characteristics that say it is, then it probably is.

The second part was changed by me many years ago from "....then it is." on the basis that it is not foolproof.

In my experience, the Whitefriars version has less optic ribs and are more subtle than show in your photo, which for a 6 " size seems to have too many narrowly spaced ribs.  Here's a (bad )photo of my 8 inch version

Assuming the one in the catalogue is the 10-in. one, yours looks to have too few ribs Emmi

The one I see i the catalogue is just a line drawing, I have never seen a Whitefriars one in the flesh with all those narrow ribs - can't imagine why the catalogue picture looks so far from the reality.. Orrefors made optic ribbed vases with numerous  narrow ribs like the one belonging to bfg, it is also only 6 inches.  Whitefriars made them only in 12, 10 and 8 inches.
