French Art Deco enamelled glass - Mazoyer or A Lazoyer?
«

The name Mazoyer has crept onto the board a couple of time and I've always assumed the few pieces I've seen were signed Mazoyer from what I could see. However I've just seen a piece apparently signed by an 'Albert Lazoyer' and having seen the signature it does read as A Lazoyer, and could easily be mistaken for Mazoyer instead. Is it really supposed to be A Lazoyer which stands for apparently Albert Lazoyer.

Strange - google image gives 4 results for A. lazoyer and 10 pages for Mazoyer. According to Cappa, Mazoyer is an alias for an unknown yet talented decorator who worked mainly for the ceramics industry.

yes, I found plenty that refer to him/her as H Lazoyer as well
example sig here again (see below link) - where I suppose it could be mistaken for H Lazoyer. Christies refer to a vase they sold as signed H Lazoyer.
It seems that the sig could be construed as either Mazoyer or H Lazoyer or A Lazoyer hence my confusion.
(I just look at the pretty pictures in Cappa as my French is severely limited to sorting out our plumbing and electric problems with a dictionary and ordering dinner/drinks
)

Glasmaken Lexicon, usually pretty reliable, has it as A Mazoyer
and says he was based in the city of Moulins regional capital of Allier central France, in a shop called 'Nouvelle Galerie' 1910-45 -possibly with a Paris shop too c1930.
And as moulins are windmills it would explain the windmills often on the signature
The Lexicon sites the main source for this as a ceramics book as they did ceramics too
cheers

I think he used the first capital for both his first name and surname; so it´s an ´A´ and
´M´ at the same time. When, like in this case, a small piece of the enamel is worn it can
easily be misread as ´A L´.

It certainly is Mazoyer! I have been collecting Mazoyer for over 10 years now. If you send me an e-mail, I can provide you with some interesting information about this glass maker.
