Scavo Ewer/ Jug?
« on: August 31, 2012, 03:52:01 AM »
Hi all,  I have had this jug for a while now and have not been able to find any information regarding this particular type, especially paying attention to the texture.  My first thoughts is that it may be Scavo.  This is solely based upon one of my previous posts (http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,31027.msg168182.html#msg168182).  I know that this type of technique (Scavo) was used in Murano in the 50's to create an archeological effect, like those found many years under ground.  This particular Jug, areas around the glass are partly smooth and partly a sand grain texture. Even the sand grain texture is not rough to touch.   The whole jug down to the handle is irregular in shape.  The pontil area is concaved and jagged with very sharp sections around the edge.  I think the spiral effect, mainly around the bowl was not created deliberately and may of been created during the blowing and turning process.  As I am no expert on the subject matter, hopefully someone will be able to elaborate.  It would also be interesting to know the period and age.  The height is 13.7cm.  Opening approx. 6.6cm.  Pontil area approx. 2.4cm and about 0.9cm deep towards the centre.  I am quite surprise that the centre of the pontil has remained intact as it appears to be very thin, considering how thick the jug is, approx.0.3cm. The weight is approx. 300g.  I appreciate any help you can provide on this subject matter and the information provided is enough to assist you with your investigations.
