Murano Basket
« on: April 04, 2006, 04:11:17 PM »
I was informed by the seller that this glass basket was Murano 1944, would that be the year of manufacture or model number? or is it Murano at all?
He has a large collection of glass mostly Italian.      940 grams in weight 7 3/4 inches high, any help apreciated, thanks.

It looks more like Chalet glass from Canada than a Murano piece. And I'd guess it's date closer to the 1970s than 1940s.

I agree with Laura.
Look at Michel Blais Gallery here http://www.mblaisgallery.com/ and on ebay.com for similar.

Hi,
I have one of these baskets, it looks just the same but..........Is yours actually completely clear and all the amber colouring 'appears' when you photograph it?

Laura, is chalet glass supposed to be signed? This is a question I have been unable to clarify!!
 Thanks

Most Chalet glass is not signed. Occasionally you'll find one with a "chalet" acid etch.

Thanks Laura. Is there any way to be sure if a piece of glass is Chalet, or do you just have to look in the Micheal Blais gallery and see if there is anything similar?
I have a couple of pieces that I am sure are Chalet, the finish seems to be very good on them, very highly polished and non of the tooling marks that you quite often see on Murano. Am I on the right tracks?

To my knowledge there is no definitive or easy way to tell Chalet from Murano. We cannot even be sure that Michel Blais has it right but we just assume that he knows thru handling a lot of Chalet.

Murano generally ranges from ok quality to the very very best.
Chalet is probably better than some Murano but not as good as others.

I'm curious to know what kind of Murano pieces you have which show tooling marks !
That may be a sign not not very good quality Murano but may indicate something else !

See Laura's and other's comments elsewhere in this forum on how to recognise Murano.
