Monart light shade variant
« on: September 26, 2012, 07:12:07 PM »
The images below are from the Monart Lighting ware catalogue held in Perth Museum.
Whilst trying to clean up the image so I could read the writing at the bottom of image one, I came across a variant hidden among the dirt, image two is the original and image three, I filled in.

It llooks like it reads 'with special GIRTH for HOLOPHANE fitting' ?  could it read that?
Having looked up Holophane it seems to be a lighting manufacture that was based in London according to Wikipedia.  Would that fit?

yes, as I was writing it I was thinking of those lights but I always thought Holophane was that ribbed type of lightshade not that they were a manufacturer.  I suppose they made all sorts of things then? not just the lightshades?  I was thinking if it did say 'girth' that would be because it needed to be adapted to fit their fitting?

It reads " Size V+ if with special neck for holophane fitting". The neck on image one is shaped differently than image three. The neck on image three would be shaped like so to take the holophane fitting and hung with the chain which would take the strain of the holophane fitting and the shade. Where as in image one, the cable from the ceiling would take the strain of the shade.

I need to add, what wonderful and exciting detective work Gary!
Have a banana, a bottle of bubbly, some expensive choccies, name the new variant after yourself... 8)

I think flying-free is so excited and inspired by the information that she has just dived into the research side head-first, and that info is really exciting too - I'm almost dancing in my seat here.

I'm all of a tizz, I'm SO impressed. ;D
