Opalescent Polar Bear flower frog centrepiece - Is this Reich?
« on: September 28, 2012, 07:30:05 AM »
Hello all

This is my first opalescent glass. I'm not sure of the maker, but I do think it is made by one of the Czech glass makers. Reich?? maybe?

I'm hoping some experts such as friendly Nigel and Pamela etc with their enormous amount of knowledge in pressed glass will be able to give their thoughts

Any info is much appreciated.

Thanking all in advance...cheers..Brenton

Very nice.I think Reich is a strong possibility as its their typical thick opalescence and I have had many items of Reich in opalescent.
I have seen the complete set in green and also had the green bowl that goes with it and again its a familiar green of Reichs.
I seem to recognise colours from makers for example Walthers green is so recognisable as is Sowerbys.
Did you get a bowl with this?
I recently purchased a green mermaids clock that I am certain is Reich too but alas no catalogues to show if it was.
The only other maker I can think of (apart from the obvious French factories) that did opalescence is Inwald/Barolac.

Hi Nigel

Many thanks for your reply. I don't have the bowl unfortunately. Would love to find the bowl and complete the set oneday, but I know it's not easy. I have a pink polar bear as well, also without the bowl :(
Recently, there was a complete set on sale in green, sadly the centrepiece has had a crack and a significant damage around the edge of the top rim.

You've had many nice pieces in your collection and that uranium clock you purchased recently was seriously beautiful. The colour of that clock kinda reminded me of the 3 ladies comport base with pressed roses??

Also, would like to congrats you for finding a Victoria comport set. As for a green Arabella lamp, I'm sure you can find an example for your collection oneday. Good luck and happy hunting.

Cheers, and again thanks
Brenton

Just come across this old thread and wondered if these polar bears were confirmed as Reich as I just picked this one up which was sold to me as Bagley. I can’t find many comparisons to help but don’t think it’s English. Thanks Mike

Hi Mike
I still think a strong possibility is Reich
I have a set in amber and a set in blue and have compared their colours to confirmed Reich glass that I also have.
The bowl design also reminds me of the ice men sets in its intricate detailing too

Thanks Nigel for such a quick response, I think I've also found an amber  bear with similar detail as the centre column of a centrepiece supporting a bowl but I cannot find the picture now. While researching this piece I found another one in flamingo pink. Cheers Mike

Sounds interesting. I've seen a comport Base with a bear standing in the past but it had a bowl on it that didn't match so never knew what the correct bowl was to go on it.

I've not really tried Facebook for looking at glass, I'll have a look.  I also have a Harald vase, the only uranium comparison I have come across was a Australian face book picture.
Unfortunately my Harald vase does not have a frog for Lucretia to sit in at the moment.

That's strange some of the thread of the conversation is missing

The thread looks like it’s be moved to the “glass market place” as the green one is now for sale. Cheers Mike
