Paperweights - help with ID
« on: April 06, 2006, 08:35:27 PM »
Hi all

Its my first visit here today so be gentle with me  :D

I bought three paperweights today and have been trying to ID them - I have a positive ID on one of them but am still in the dark on the other two.
Would you kind folks help me out.
I am thinking the later 1976 Montreal Olympic games weight is maybe Whitefriars ??? but the other one I really dont know.

Thanks for your help.

Your olympics paperweight isn't millefiori which is what Whitefriars specialised in when the made commemorative weights.

It would be marked as Whitefriars with a small cane which looks like a J but is actually a monk, and it would have the date.

I'm not too sure about your first paperweight though, could be modern Bohemian, or even American. It's a nice one though.

Hi there Simone

Gosh that was quick !!! Thank you

I was trying to figure the monogram on the first - as I thought maybe it might help somewhat but I cant decipher it.

Oh - Ok - didnt realise whitefriars only did millifiori in commemoratives. The olympics weight does carry a date on it (in writing) - its 1976 - but like you say - its not a millifiori design.

It's because it hasn't got the monk cane.

By the way - I was probably the underbidder on this lot at Biddle & Webb - you've saved me phoning them to see how I did. This was the one I was after though!!

Whitefriars Olympic Games Paperweight
« Reply #7 on: April 09, 2006, 11:38:20 AM »
The Olympic Games Paperweight is definitely Whitefriars and may possibly have a small monk engraved on the side of the weight. They made a magnum sized weight like this for the Investiture of the Prince of Wales in 1969, another for the Queens Silver Wedding in 1972, the Munich Olympic Games in 1972 and this one for the Montreal Games in 1976.
As soon as anyone says Whitefriars, most collectors think immediately of the fine quality millifiore weights they produced but in fact the majority of paperweights they made were bubble designs and when before the factory closed they began experimenting and produced paperweights with coloured transfer designs.
