drinking glasses or toothpick holders.
« on: October 27, 2012, 06:21:34 PM »
seems unusual bowl shape for drinking glass so assumed they might be toothpick holders, but really not sure.         Certainly not lead glass though  -  height is about 4.25" with slight variation between them, foot diameter (a little irregular) about 2.5/8" and rim is about 1.5/8" (fire polished).    Colour very slightly greyish and the ground/polished pontil makes me think somewhere in the first half of the C19, but could be later.   Assume not a firing glass of sorts since foot not thick enough.        Like almost all cutting, the wheel has run at 90 degrees to the axis of the glass.         Thanks for looking and grateful for any and all thoughts. :)

Hi Paul S

Could they be for *Sherry* Glasses to drink?   Being smaller ?? For smaller shots of booze ??

 Just my guess  ???

hello Rose - you may well be correct, I'm a little lost on these to say the least  -  the bowl shape and unusually wide foot  seem at odds with anything that I can think of, which is why I made the suggestion of toothpick holder.        Would agree re the sherry angle  -  they remind me of the shape of sherry schooners, although don't know how far that shape goes back  -  just that I couldn't remember seeing anything similar to this from the C19.              Perhaps they aren't that old - may be early C20.
