Topic: Monart Cloisonne Bowl

Hi all,

Excited by my new find - a Monart cloisonne bowl - a simple bowl shape JC. Clear inner then white (this shows more concentrated at the base and can be seen more on the inside), then blue (greeny blue) over that. The first picture is shown with  piece of white paper inside it to show off the "crackle effect". Of the two base shots - the first one was taken with a flash which seems to show the white up more.  Typical ground pontil scar but no outer grinding as this would have spoilt the effect!

Any guesses what size it is?

No wonder you are excited, a nice shaped bowl in a great type of finish/colourway.
Only a guess on the size code being V1 (21.5cm in diameter).

Very unusual colourway for Cloissone, and an unusual shape too.
Sadly, I hate it, with a vengeance. Pale baby blue is about as bad as pale baby pink to me.
It arouses strong emotion, so that's ok. Proves it's still proper art!

It's a wonderful piece, I know.

Thanks Sue     it's not really baby blue - must admit I'm not very keen on the Monart pale blue stuff, it's really more of a sea colour - teal (ish) - the flash seems to bring out the white behind it and change the colour.

It's a baby size too - smallest size (X - 5" diameter) for this shape  (see picture with the "grown up") - it's not a particularly striking piece, quite subtle and delicate for Monart, but I haven't come across any other cloisonne quite like this, most are much stronger colours and more white as the outer layer.

My 5" is in the same colourway as your big one there.

I did wonder if it was the same size as my little one - there was something about the thinness and delicacy of the construction.
I honesly don't know how they managed to fit beautiful big bubbles into glass as thin as this, and bend it into shape, and then fix and polish the the pontil scar out.
And it's survived, damage free (so far, says she, ensuring she's in contact with wood while typing.  )
It never ceases to amaze me.

How they succeeded with your little bowl is another mystery - all that serioulsy complicated stuff on such a small scale is much harder to achieve than on bigger bits.

  Technically, it's under 4 inches tall. Is it a miniature?

No, not a miniature, just the smallest size of that shape. Do you have a picture of yours, I'd love to see it - I love that colourway and bubbles!!!

Can you tell from my pics that I was far more interested in the close-up detail than of showing the whole thing?
The colours showed up much better when it was upside down.
If glass looks better upside down, that's how I display it.
