Yorkshire glass Birth of the Phoenix (Ovenware)
« on: December 02, 2012, 08:05:11 PM »
Just noticed these names in Edinburgh Gazette bankrupts... Feb 16th 1869

Hartley Barron, of Mexbrough, York, bookkeeper.
Thomas Barron, of Mexbrough, York, glassblower.
John Barron, of Mexbrough, York, glassblower.

Hadjamach uses a photograph from Wakefield Libraries to illustrate a pot shop and it happens to be Thomas Barron's bottle works in Mexborough and dates this to the turn of the century (i.e. c1900)

Ashurst tells us more: Mexborough Flint Glass Works was taken over by a Joseph Barron in 1849 and renamed Don Works in 1850. His son Joseph rebuilt in 1857 and went bankrupt in 1867... to be taken over by Hartley Barron and 2 others, he built a second Don Works at Denaby... but that sank into the ground... oops. Mine subsidence. Thomas reappears in 1876 when he takes over original works and renames t Phoenix... clearly recovered from his bankruptcy. As Phoenix the Barron family survived until 1989 when they sold out.
