I'm looking for any historical/descriptive background on this bowl.  Any indication of approximate value would also be appreciated.

Hi, welcome to the GMB.  I think it might be by Fratelli Toso, but wait for one of the more knowledgeable Murano folk to confirm.  The style of glass looks right for the range of bowls designed by Ermanno Toso in the 1950's/60's, as does the blue Murano label.
