Millefiori Glass Box ID???
« on: February 06, 2013, 06:27:46 PM »
Pretty sure this is not considered a paperweight.
Bought at an outdoor market today in Pickens South Carolina.
Measures 4" or 10mm across, 2 1/2" or 6mm back, 2" or 5mm deep.
Could not find anything similar on the w.w.w..
Would like to find out any information one may know on this piece.
Thank you,
Tony

While being no expert this looks like it's from Murano to me. Something similar-ish did fairly well on Ebay recently although no note of a specific maker http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Exquisite-Antique-Millefiori-Italian-Art-Glass-Domed-Box-Gilt-Bronze-Trim-Hinge-/281033023871?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item416edfa17f

Thank you, that is the first one I've seen to compare.
It must have been very desirable, as I can see why.
It is a very nice piece.
Several of the canes seem to be very similar.

That is true, but many paperweight collectors would regard this as a "related object" (because of the millefiori) which in turn means that a wider audience could be interested.

As for a possible maker of this box, I would defer to someone like Anita, although I would suggest mid to later 20th century. The canes might be identifiable to a particular maker but canes from a few makers were used by many others - and some have been sold for use worldwide.

Is it possible for this thread be moved to paperweights?
Guess I thought most on this site, like myself, look at all the categories.

It would be better to move the thread to the Murano forum, but not just yet. Let's see if there are any further replies here first.

(Within the paperweights forum, folk would very likely not come up with much more info about a specific maker. The same problem about canes apples to many regular paperweights.)

That eBay item has canes from Effetre (formerly Moretti) and those canes were certainly sold around the world to anyone who requested them. Unfortunately, the Effetre website that I have just looked at has a "Page not found" message for the "Millefiori" section.

So, we are still in the problem area of these boxes possibly being made in Murano or somewhere else entirely.
