I'm 99.99% certain this is nothing very special, but I quite liked the middle cane! lol

Is it Chinese?

The base is polished, but very dull. It's not entirely circular, but is misshapen and is definitely off centre.

Around four canes there's almost a little halo of clear glass, that seems to have melted around them. Don't know if that makes any sense - it could be how they're attached for all I know! lol Perhaps it's a clear outer coating on the cane melting? <shrugs helplessly>

Base

Sorry...don't know anything about paperweight manufacture! :oops:

I was thinking it was Chinese, or perhaps Czech? :? PS: It doesn't appear to be brand new at least.

I thought to compare to to my other motley paperweights....I'm pretty sure it's Chinese now, from the base. I should have thought to do that first. Sorry. :oops: :oops: :oops:

Don't fall into the 'matt, unpolished base = Chinese' trap, Max :lol:

Doesn't look much like Chinese colours at all, to me! :? And if the Chinese pulled canes like that, I'm surprised. And impressed :shock:

But China's a big place! :lol: :roll: :wink:

It could well be European, maybe Romanian, Yugoslavian or Polish, but I don't think it's Chinese.

It's unusual Max and nice too.

Well, I'm hanging onto it for a while as I quite like the colours (not that base colour though in spotty white and red! :x )

Interesting weight, Max.

I don't recognise those canes either, but unless the Chinese have dramatically improved their cane making, I agree that it's likely to be from some other place.

Your description of, "a little halo of clear glass, that seems to have melted around them", is good. One of the canes cleary shows minute air bubbling at a join between clear glass around the the cane and the main clear glass of the dome. I believe it is a problem of temperature differences of the elements at the time of covering with the outer gather. Some early Vasart weights show this effect and it can also seen in many other weights when canes are viewed in high magnification.

Perhaps you could let me know if you see something similar somewhere? It'd be nice to have a country of production if possible, but I know how difficult these things can be. xx
