An unusual Art Deco crystal trinket set (tray, two lidded pots and a pin dish) produced by Stuart & Sons at Wordsley, each piece beautifully hand-decorated in enamels with depictions of blue butterflies. The oval tray which measures 9¼ x 7¾. All pieces are acid etched underneath with the Stuart trademark.

Charles Hajdamach’s ‘20th Century British Glass’ has a substantial part of a chapter on Stourbridge enamelled glass – it shows a crystal candlestick enamelled with butterflies of different hues on page 118 (plate 230), and on pages 120 and 121 (plates 232, 234, 235 and 236) there are pages from the Stuart pattern book showing a variety of enamelled butterflies on a range of pieces. Of particular relevance to the trinket set, plate 235 (page 121) shows design sketches dated 21 January 1929 depicting a powder bowl of similar shape to that in the trinket set surmounted by butterflies, and Hajdamach states that ‘blue butterflies were first introduced in February 1929’.

And now here are two photos of another Stuart set in the same pattern (but decorated with multicoloured butterflies) with the addition of matching candlesticks.

A Stuart crystal set in the same basic pattern shape, but this time decorated with an enamelled stylised floral design.

(Permission for the re-use of these images on the GMB granted by Leda Drucaroff).

This set has no pin tray, but does have a ringholder and pair of small lidded pots.

4 photos of another Stuart enamelled trinket set with the same basic shape to the pieces, but a stylised floral design which differs from that in reply #4. I will add 3 further photos in the post immediately following this.

• The tray (26 cm x 22 cm)
• Pair of candlesticks (8.3 cm high x 10 cm base diameter)
• Small trinket pot (7 cm diameter)
• Large trinket pot (8.5 cm diameter)
• Ring holder (8.7 cm high x 8.3 cm base diameter).

The candlesticks, ringholder and pot bases are acid-etched on their underside with the 'Stuart | England' trademark. The pot lids and the tray do not have trademarks.

In this particular set, the tray rim is not cut, and neither is the tray centre  (which has a matching enamelled design instead).
