Ballard bell bowl
« on: March 04, 2013, 02:05:41 PM »
Small bowl Diameter 12,5 = 5", height 8,5 cm = 3.1/2".  It is very light aqua glass, partially powdered in blue but so light you can hardly see, and it has bird silhouettes in brown. The bottom is smooth but not polished - so a little greyish.  That may be the reason that I missed the fact the piece is signed - though it needs a favourable light and strong magnification to see it...

As far as I can make out it says

(C) JL BALLARD
7-82

Doth it ring a belle, anyone?

Probably the wrong direction completely, but there is a Joanne Ballard producing studio work (in the U.K.), although she is known really for her abstract centrifugally cast work  -  active over past 20 years mostly, I think.         Always vaguely possible this is something from her early years when she was at Wolverhampton Uni.     Do you think the digits are implying July '82?

Yes I saw that one but she seems to do slumped only.  And I do think 7/82 is 1982 - which is 30 years ago...  I'm also wondering about the use of the (C) sign - I thought that was usually a pointer for the americas.

There may be something going on in my belfry,  ;D but I am unsure as to any accuracy. The name may simply be ringing bells because of its similarity to the author JC Ballard.

However, there is something quite "Scottish contemporary studio" about it. I'm wondering where I might have put an ancient list I have of members of the Scottish Glass Society... it might be easier to track down online than find it in the house. :-[
