Topic: Caithness Magnum

I picked up a nice magnum Caithness Dolphinarium  weight weighing 1.6 kilos by Helen MacDonald this morning it came with a print out from Scotlands glass the print out gives the number u 97161  - 1997 mine is marked  v 27458  anyone  know about the numbering please , the design and colours are so similar to a vase I had that was Hadeland by Severin Broby and said to be their Graal ? . I also met a guy with what I believe is a very nice P Ysart weight he knew nothing about it but was not interested in selling it so I told him my thoughts and directed him to GMB for Alans help Cheers jp

I have been told in the past on a visit to Caithness Glass that the letter indicated the year of manufacture, and that the number was to do with the total of all the unlimited pieces made to that time in that year.  It was a  plausible explanation, but someone may have been making it up!

The story was that they began with 'A' (not sure when) but missed out some letters.  I think 'U' indicates 1997, 'V' 1998 and so on.  The numbers are not always easy to read though and can be confusing.

Thanks Alan its all neat clear and easy to read on my one . the print out from Scotlands glass that came with it says original price  £60 in 1997!!! that's quite a lot init ?. jp

These are two completely different types of numbering.

U97161 indicates the production code (valid for all weights of this design)
U for unlimited
- 97 for 1997 as year of first issue
---- 161 is the design number in 1997

V27458 is the individual numbering of your weight (as described by Alan) - with V indicating this very weight was actually made in 1999.

This numbering system was started with A in 1983 - but a few letters were omitted to avoid confusion, e.g. "I" not used in order not to be confused with "1".
